Beschreibung

Persistent infections with pathogens such as Helicobacter pylori drive chronic, low-grade inflammation, which sets the stage for the development of serious pathologies not only in the stomach but also in distant organs. The Horejs-Hoeck lab aims to unravel how H. pylori manipulates host immunity.

YOUR PROFILE:

Completed master’s degree in life sciences, medical biology, molecular biology, immunology, or comparable areas
Very good English skills (spoken and written)
Enthusiasm for basic research and a high level of interest in the areas of immunity and host-pathogen interactions
Ability to perform tasks independently while working collaboratively as part of a team
Basic knowledge in immunology and/or microbiology
Practical experience in molecular biology methods (qPCR, flow cytometry, ELISA, Western Blot), cell culture (isolation of cells from tissue or peripheral blood)
Practical experience in animal experiments or bioinformatics is desirable but not required

YOUR TASKS:

Planning and conducting experiments in the field of host-pathogen interactions
Investigating innate immune responses to pathogens such as Helicobacter pylori
Establishment of gastric organoid/immune cells co-cultures
Isolation of bacterial extracellular vesicles, cell culture of primary human cells, flow cytometry, fluorescent microscopy, spatial transcriptomics
Co-Supervision of Bachelor and Master Students
Presenting collected data in national and international congresses

This PhD position is fully funded by the Austrian Science Fund, FWF, for three years and should be filled by January 2025.
